“Hardware is easy to protect: lock it in a room, chain it to a desk, or buy a spare. Information poses more of a problem. It can exist in more than one place; be transported halfway across the planet in seconds; and be stolen without your knowledge. “

— Bruce Schneier (Protect Your Macintosh, 1994)

Information security has become one of the greatest concerns for people. Intruders and hackers are coming up with new mechanisms in order to get inside the network and steal valuable information. Information such as credit card numbers, social security numbers, email accounts and more could be used for unethical purposes such as theft, spam, DOS attacks and etc. For companies, they need to secure their confidential data from being leaked out. To prevent attackers from getting this data, companies need to secure themselves.

To relate to this issue, ACM SZABIST is arranging yet another informative seminar by Mr. Raheem Kazani. He is currently manager – Information Technology Risk and Assurance (ITRA) at Ernst & Young Global Limited. He has Over 7 years of experience in IT industry in different areas such as

ü Enterprise networked storage administration,

ü IT infrastructure design and analysis,

ü Business process analysis,

ü Intrusion detection/prevention systems,

ü Clustering,

ü High availability,

ü Ethical hacking and countermeasures,

ü OS hardening,

ü Information systems audit,

ü Business continuity management (BCM),

ü Information life-cycle management (ILM)

ü Information technology service management (ITSM) a.k.a information technology infrastructure library (ITIL).

Join us to learn about this area of IT, information security, and find out about career opportunities in this area. This seminar will take place on 16th April 2011 from 3:00 pm to 6:00 pm in room 308, 100 Clifton, SZABIST.

Coding might not be very interesting for many. However, creating software is what has made the technological evolution possible. The biggest example is of the internet, because at the end of the day the Internet is still all about software and coding. To celebrate the importance of software engineering, ACM SZABIST brings to you an exhibition showcasing the software projects of the 6th Semester BS Computing students. There are variety of projects and unique ideas which will not only create the awareness of the power of coding but also surprise many of the kind of talent available at SZABIST. The talent is there but it just needs to be found and recognized. That is exactly what we are doing. So do come to recognize the talent and be amazed with the remarkable work done by the 6th semester students. Please appreciate the efforts of these students by coming to the exhibition on the 16th April 2011 from 9:00 am to 2:00 pm in Media Studio at 100 Clifton, SZABIST. Looking forward to see you all!

The season of midterm exams is finally over and this means that we can take out time to enjoy! ACM SZABIST is not just about Advancing Computing as a Science and a Profession, but it also provides a platform where students can meet and enjoy by taking part in our fun activities and events. This is because we have a strong believe that all work and no play makes Jack a dull boy. That is why ACM SZABIST is the pioneer of hosting computer gaming competitions for the people to get involved and so people take time off from the work to enjoy.

This time of year, we have joined our hands together with other societies for Extravaganza 2011 to bring some amazing competitions for all the people who think they can take the challenge. Registrations are already over and very soon the game shall begin!

Following are the challenges:

The Chess Master

“Chess is war over the board. The object is to crush the opponents mind” –Bobby Fischer

All the challengers are advised to start training their mind and get ready for the ultimate chess war to win the title of “The Chess Master”. All the best of intellects will come under one roof to battle against each other to win this war. At the Extravaganza 2011 some will check mate and win whereas others will just realize that they are not clever enough!

Dates:

Monday (Day 1): 28/Feb/2011, 2:00pm-5:00pm

Tuesday (Day 2): 29/Feb/2011, 2:00pm-5:00pm

Time the Coder

Some of us just don’t like to code, but it is passion for others. This competition is for all the coders out there who think they can code faster than anyone else. We are looking for the champion who can actually code faster than all the coders. Only time will tell who wins this game of time the coder.

Date:

Wednesday: 2/March/2011, 10:00am-1:00pm

So get ready everyone to watch these exciting competitions. Other details will be updated very soon on our website, so stay connected.

We hope that the best player wins. For now, let the game begin!

We welcome any individuals or organizations who are interested in becoming a part of this group’s research and activities.

We need to raise awareness of the threats and vulnerabilities that exist on Pakistan’s networks today. This can be done by demonstrating real systems that are compromised in the wild by the Black Hat community. Since many people don’t think it can happen to them, we have to change their minds.”

ACM members helped them to bring their ideas and projects to a stage where they could be appreciated and this young talent could be identified.

Around 150 students and faculty members had attended it from various departments and programs which include Computer Sciences, Management Sciences, Social Sciences and Media Sciences. The president of SZABIST, Dr.Izhar-ul-Haq took out time and visited this exhibition. His comments about this Math-tech were, “Salam. Well done and really some brilliant use of math. Keep it up. Izhar.”
Other than our President, Dean of Computing department, Dr. Imran Amin also visited. His comments were “Brilliant effort by the students”

Comments of many other faculty members who visited were as follows,

Mr. Siddique, Our Academic Controller: “Excellent job done by BS-Computing students and the ACM team”

Ms. Shehla Najib, Coordinator BABS & EMBA: “A job very well done and appreciated! Also I finally learnt how to play poker:)”

Ms. Wajeeha Fatima, Coordinator BBA: ”Congrats to ACM and SZA for a wonderful experience”

Ms. Ayesha Jamal, Faculty: “A very well done up event. Thoroughly enjoyed every project.”

Syed M. Ali Shah, Research Editor: “An academically enlightening experience. The manner in which students shedlight on the mathematical side of life, which is otherwise veiled from our numerically unsavvy eyes, is to be appreciated by us all. Being no man of mathematics, it was quite an eye-opening experience…”

Getting all these encouragements and appreciations, we have become more enthusiastic than ever before. So the whole ACM SZABIST Student Chapter team would like to thank everyone of you who have supported us and given us the encouragement to not only think out of the box, but also execute our plans. We will be needing your support and guidance in future too!
